DEFINING OM GAIA
Many of you have asked, "What does Om Gaia mean?" and even "How do you pronounce it?" Here's a brief intro to our name and our goal.
Om Gaia is a chant, a mantra, a prayer, an ideal and a spiritual little gift store in Bradenton, Florida. The name "Om Gaia" came to us in a dream, as we searched for the name that was both spiritual and inclusive while describing what we do and the path we have chosen.
Om: from the Sanskrit language and Buddhist and Hindu traditions, represents Creation from the above, the first primordial sound of the universe, enlightenment and compassion for all beings. Pronounced Ohm, Aum, and with three distinct sounds A-U-M when chanting. For our purposes and generally speaking, rhymes with "home."
Gaia: Ancient Greek for "Mother Earth" who represents the first deity created by humanity. Gaia gave birth to not only the planet and all of its inhabitants, but also to the heavens and the stars. She is the creative force from the below, we all come from and will one day return to the Earth. The word "Gaia" also represents new concepts such as the Gaian Hypothesis of interrelatedness: we are all connected and a vital piece of a larger planetary consciousness. When the first astronaut looked down upon the world, it was the first time Gaia saw herself. Pronounced "Gai-yah" with the emphasis on the first syllable. Rhymes with "hi ya!"
Om Gaia: As above, so below. Creation from the Earth or physical, and spiritual inspiration from the divine. A prayer for peace and transformation for all people of the world. A prayer for compassion for the suffering of the world. A prayer for creating a new vision of the world that promotes, peace, prosperity and soul harmony for all people. And although we struggle at times, we strive to be these things.
Om Gaia Spiritual Center: A place in Bradenton, Florida that supports these goals. A spiritual gift and supply store that provides the tools, both physical and inspirational, to support people in achieving their life's spiritual goals. A community center that provides a space for people to gather for spiritual purposes from many spiritual traditions.
